Call for Papers

The Human-Centred AI Education and Practice (HCAI-EP) conference from the Ireland ACM SIGCSE Chapter (and supported by the Human-Centred AI MSc HCAIM) is seeking high-quality contributions to research Human-Centred AI in Education and Practice.

Contributions are sought in a variety of categories with an emphasis on high-quality and rigorous work. Researchers have the opportunity to disseminate their work as a full paper, short paper or poster.

The following contributions are sought from the community:

  • Papers. Six-page research or practice papers for presentation at the conference and publication in the HCAI-ep proceedings (This year this track will be published in ACM Digital Library with its International Conference Proceedings Series (ICPS), See previous publications here)
  • Short papers. A three to four-page short paper on research or practice. These will be published in the HCAI-ep proceedings (This year this track will be published with conference proceedings).
  • Posters. Single-page poster abstract for publication in the HCAI-ep proceedings (This year this track will be published in ACM Digital Library with its International Conference Proceedings Series (ICPS), see previous publications here) and poster for presentation at the conference.

Submission for all the above-mentioned contributions should be made via Easychair [Submit here]. Authors must follow the submission guidelines prior to submitting contributions for consideration.

ACM has introduced a new Open Access publishing model for ICPS, described in detail here. Full details of the ACM Open program are provided here.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the conference chairs.

Papers

We invite submissions of research papers on the topic of human-centered AI Education and Practice. Themes of interest include, but are not limited to:

EducationPractice
Human-Centred AI Education Pedagogy
Human-Centred AI Curriculum Development
Assessing and Providing Feedback on Human-Centred AI Assignments
Issues of Inclusivity and Diversity
Tools to Aid Human-Centred AI Education
Ethics in Human-Centred AI Education
Policy and How it is Integrated in Human-Centred AI Education
Human-Centred AI in Digital Transformation
Human-Centred AI Integration Into Production Models
Human-Centred AI in Healthcare
Building Trust Using Human-Centred AI Approaches
Transparency and XAI for Human-Centred AI
Fintech Using Human-Centred AI

All submissions related to Human Centred AI Education and Practice are welcome, at any stage of education or practice. Papers should describe a rigorously executed piece of work and include a motivating research question and discussion of prior related work. We welcome:

  • Education research papers describing a research experiment in a school, university or informal educational setting. The experiment should be rigorously conducted – if this is the case, null results will still be considered for publication.
  • Practice research papers that carefully document design constraints, user considerations, and relevant stakeholder concerns, and justify the design decisions taken in a way that would be useful to other designers, and include details of user testing or other initial measures of effectiveness, transparency, and trustworthiness.

All submitted papers should include a clear research component and adhere to the SIGSOFT Empirical Standards appropriate to their research methodology—for example, for a systematic literature review authors should ensure their work adheres to the SIGSOFT Empirical Standards for Literature Reviews, including clear research questions, inclusion/exclusion criteria, reproducible search strategies, and critical appraisal of sources. Authors are encouraged to identify the societal or technological targets and indicators that align with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Authors are expected to consult the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and the Assessment List for Trustworthy AI (ALTAI) to ensure their research aligns with emerging standards for the development of responsible and trustworthy AI.

Papers that authors would like to be considered for presentation at the conference and publication proceedings must be submitted via Easychair. Authors should consult the detailed submission guidelines for papers prior to submission.

The paper is limited to a maximum of six pages plus one page for references. Note that this is not the same as seven pages: if there is a seventh page, there must be nothing on it but references. If the paper includes figures and tables, the text in them must be readable at 100% magnification and in greyscale. Figures and tables must be readable in the printed version of the paper.

For template and submission guidelines please see: Submission Guidelines.

Short Papers

Short papers are expected to present unpublished, original work in progress or in the early stages related to empirical or theoretical research relevant to the topics of human-centered AI Education and Practice. Short papers are expected to follow the same format and themes of interest as the full research paper track. The distinction is that the works in this track should satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • Student work
  • Work in progress
  • Pilot findings

The paper title must end with “(Student work)” or “(Work in progress)” or “(Pilot findings)”

For template and submission guidelines please see: Submission Guidelines

Posters

The posters program provides an informal venue for scholarly submissions within the scope of HCAI-EP’26: whether it be completed work, work in progress, or a successful system or application. It serves to foster discussion amongst the community and provide feedback for authors. We additionally welcome poster submissions on projects that have been previously published but for which additional dissemination and discussion are desired. Dedicated poster presentations and fast-forward sessions will be included in the conference program.

A submission for a poster is a one-page paper. It is expected that this will include title, authors, abstract and keywords, with the rest of the page consisting of an extended abstract. The poster abstract should be relevant to researchers in Human-Centred AI Education and Practice. Example posters could include initial ideas, experimental designs, pedagogical techniques, tools, or early proposals to address open challenges in Human-Centred AI Education or Practice. The nature of the content will vary from poster to poster, but it should clearly outline the main topic and include relevant references where applicable.

For previously unpublished work, authors have the option to have their poster abstracts published in the ACM Digital Library if desired. Papers not accepted to the main track may be given the option to present as a poster (extended abstract), providing opportunities for feedback and discussion that can strengthen the work for future submissions. There are two rounds of poster proposal submissions, please see the timeline below.

Poster abstracts that presenters would like to be considered for presentation at the conference must be submitted via Easychair. Authors should consult the detailed submission format instructions and guidelines for poster abstracts before submitting.

For template and submission guidelines, please see: Submission Guidelines

HCAI-ep will be held face-to-face, and all presenters will be required to present their poster in person during a dedicated time slot. More information will be made available in due course.

Important note to authors about ACM’s new open access publishing model

ACM has introduced a new open access publishing model for the International Conference Proceedings Series (ICPS). Authors based at institutions that are not yet part of the ACM Open program and do not qualify for a full geographic waiver will be required to pay an article processing charge (APC) to publish their ICPS article in the ACM Digital Library. To determine whether or not an APC will be applicable to your article, please follow the detailed guidance here: https://www.acm.org/publications/icps/author-guidance.

Further information may be found on the ACM website, as follows:

Full details of the new ICPS publishing model: https://www.acm.org/publications/icps/faq
Full details of the ACM Open program: https://www.acm.org/publications/openaccess

Please direct all questions about the new model to icps-info@acm.org.
